When I set out for the morning exercise today, I was marvelling at the coolness of the morning breeze and the somewhat cloudy nature of the sky and was wondering whether it was going to rain today in Gombe.
As I walked briskly along the streets, it hit me smack in the face and it suddenly dawned on me that a lot of economic activities were going on all around me in this early morning. I came across street sweepers who were busy doing their work with apparent zeal. On almost all the streets I passed, you can see mostly women selling food; some are frying bean cake (kosai) and pap, some selling rice, some 'danwake', some spaghetti and some 'masa'. You can also see by the roadside men selling tea and frying eggs, as well as Indomie noodles. And, of course, the ubiquitous beggars hanging close by.
You can actually eat with as little as N50.00...yes, N50.00...unbelievable as it is, I saw a man buy N20.00 pap (koko) and N30.00 kosai! In spite of the economic situation, man can live on bread alone...
Taking in all these economic activities as I walked along the streets, what came to my mind was an assignment we were given as students of Development Studies at Bayero University, Kano, more than ten years ago by Professor Falola, to describe the economic activities going on in a village on a market day...now, tell me about the economic activities going on near you...
