The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) branch, has suspended its planned strike scheduled to begin on Monday, October 6, 2025, following a series of constructive engagements that led to significant agreements with the Katsina State Government.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, by the branch Chairman, Dr. Murtala Abdullahi Kwarah, ASUU-UMYU explained that the decision came after “fruitful deliberations” between the union, the university management, and other key stakeholders. The discussions, he said, produced concrete resolutions across several contentious issues that had prompted the initial strike notice.
Key Resolutions Reached
1. University Portal Ownership: A joint committee comprising representatives from the Katsina State Government and ASUU has been established to investigate the reported handover of the university’s portal to private operators. Pending the outcome of the investigation, all transfer processes have been suspended.
2. Treasury Single Account (TSA): The State Government agreed to review the implementation of the TSA at UMYU to ensure that it aligns with the university’s operational and legal frameworks, as well as with relevant court rulings.
3. Health Insurance Scheme (KTSCHMA):
Representatives of ASUU and the Katsina State Contributory Health Management Authority (KTSCHMA) held a meeting and jointly acknowledged existing challenges in the system. Both parties agreed to continue dialogue until all outstanding issues are resolved.
4. Pension Administration:
While progress was limited due to the absence of the head of the Pension Board, assurances were given that discussions would resume immediately upon the official’s return to address ASUU’s concerns.
5. Salary Schedule and Conditions of Service:
Although ultimate approval rests with the State Governor in his capacity as the university’s Visitor, it was agreed that a formal request be resubmitted to the government for consideration and approval of ASUU’s proposals.
ASUU-UMYU announced the suspension of its planned strike until the end of October 2025, by which time it expects the government to fulfill all commitments made.
The union expressed optimism that reforms related to salary schedules and pension administration would be implemented before the end of the month. It also urged the Katsina State Government to expedite actions on issues concerning the health insurance scheme and university portal to prevent disruptions to academic activities.
The union expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions that played roles in reaching the agreements, including the university management, the State Ministry of Higher Education, alumni, students, journalists, and concerned members of the public who supported peaceful dialogue.
However, ASUU issued a strong warning that it will not hesitate to take necessary action should the government fail to honor its promises by the end of October.
“ASUU-UMYU will continue to defend the welfare of its members and the institutional autonomy of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University. We will not relent or compromise in pursuing justice if these issues are ignored again,” said Dr. Murtala Abdullahi Kwarah, ASUU-UMYU Chairman.
The latest development is seen as a temporary relief for students and staff of UMYU, as both parties work toward a lasting resolution to the lingering administrative and welfare challenges affecting the institution.
