It appears the ordeal of the poor medical students sponsored by Katsina
State Government to study in the Sudan is far from over. It is just a
tip of the iceberg.
Although Governor Masari has acted promptly by renting another house for the girls after they were ejected, the girls are still being shortchanged in the payment of their upkeep allowances.
In 2015, government approved for the upward review of their stipend by $50. Due to the high inflation in Sudan, the allowances were not enough to sustain them. A Nigerian, based in the country, was entrusted with the money. He was supposed to be paying them the additional $50 every month. He only paid them for a few months and promptly stopped paying them. He now hasn't paid them for about 17 months. All their complaints fell on deaf ears. The poor girls have nobody to complain to...
It's exactly the lack of a listening ear that led to ejecting them from their rented hostel and the beating by a security guard of one them. It is even more pathetic when the poor girl is a married woman with 2 kids.
Three days before the unfortunate incident, they kept calling the SA in charge of the program but he refused to take their calls. They sent him a text message explaining their predicament but he callously refused to respond. On the third day, he called another student who had already graduated and wasn't aware of what was going on. The student, in turn, had to call the girls to find out what was going on and reported back to the SA. Only then did the SA reluctantly issue a response, saying that another house had been rented for them and the issue of the beating was being handled by Nigerian Embassy in the Sudan.
But I learnt on good authority that even the house that was rented was far below the amount of money approved for each student by Governor Masari.
It is unfortunate that leaders will approve something in good faith but bad, greedy and callous government officials would thwart the effort.
Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema started the program in good faith and Governor Masari duely continued the good faith and even improved on it. But the poor girls are left at the mercy of unscrupulous government officials who haven't an iota of the fear of Allah in their hearts...
