The Katsina State Executive Council has approved the long-awaited digital upgrade of Katsina State Television (KTTV), marking a major step in modernizing the state-owned broadcaster after decades of operating on obsolete equipment.
Briefing journalists shortly after the Council’s 13th regular meeting chaired by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, said the project involves the installation of a 5KW main transmitter, a 2.2KW standby transmitter, and a dedicated solar backup system.
He explained that KTTV’s transmitter, which was installed over 30 years ago, had become obsolete. “With this upgrade, the station will broadcast fully on satellite, accessible via decoders and home antennas. Viewers will enjoy high-resolution video and audio content, repositioning KTTV as a central hub for information, education, and entertainment,” Dr. Zango said.
The Commissioner for Higher and Technical/Vocational Education, Dr. Muhammadu Isa, addressed public concerns over the closure of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma’s satellite campus. He clarified that the state government did not abolish the centre but only shut down illegal private tertiary institutions operating unapproved programmes in government-owned facilities.
“These centres were running NCE, diploma, and degree courses without accreditation from the NCCE or NUC,” he explained. “Only unapproved centres were affected. The Federal University Dutsin-Ma is free to run satellite campuses, but it must establish proper facilities rather than using state-owned schools.”
Special Adviser on Primary and Secondary Education, Hon. Nura Saleh Katsayal, announced the award of a contract for the supply of customized educational textbooks for early childhood, primary, and junior secondary schools across all 34 local government areas.
“This initiative will boost literacy, improve performance, and revive the reading culture in schools and public libraries,” he said.
The Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. Sani Magaji Ingawa, disclosed that the Council approved the completion of the Katsina State Transport Authority (KSTAA) Modern Terminal at Dandagoro.
“When completed, the terminal will ease transportation, modernize Katsina metropolis, and boost socio-economic activities,” he noted.
On asset management, Commissioner for Commerce and Tourism, Alhaji Yusuf Haruna Jirdede, revealed that the Council approved the lease of Malumfashi Motel to private investors.
He said the move is in line with the government’s strategy of optimizing public assets and cutting wasteful expenditure. “Just last month, Katsina Motel and Daura Motel were successfully leased to private operators, attracting billions in private investment. This ensures efficiency, sustainability, and economic returns,” Jirdede added.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, said all approvals are tied to Governor Radda’s Building Your Future agenda, which prioritizes modern infrastructure, quality education, and economic growth through private sector participation.
